What unfolded instead was a ruthless subcontinental subversion—Sri Lanka, written off after early defeats, surged to a four-day triumph to level the series 1-1. England, once again, had been outplayed not by brute force, but by the arcane artistry of one man: Muttiah Muralitharan.

A Familiar Smile, A Deadlier Craft

The ball that pitched outside leg stump and turned sharply to remove Mike Gatting’s off bail. The delivery that launched Shane Warne not just into the Ashes, but into cricketing immortality.

Warne's first ball in Ashes cricket did more than take a wicket—it rewrote the script. It became a cultural artefact, a point of origin for the mythology that would grow around Warne and his art. There are Test matches that unfold methodically, like a well-paced novel, and then there are those that twist and turn unpredictably, leaving players and spectators breathless in their wake. The 2001 Old Trafford Test between England and Pakistan belonged to the latter category—a gripping five-day contest where fortunes swung wildly, controversy flared, and cricketing brilliance shone through. 

At tea on the final day, England stood at 196 for two, seemingly on the verge of securing a hard-earned draw. With only a few hours left in the match, they were in pole position to claim a fifth consecutive series win—something they hadn’t achieved in 30 years. But in a spellbinding final session, chaos erupted. Eight wickets tumbled in a dramatic collapse, four of them to deliveries that should have been called as no-balls. Umpiring oversights aside, Pakistan’s relentless pressure proved too much for England, sealing a famous victory that reinforced the visitors’ dominance.

The match, staged beneath a canopy of largely fine weather, evolved into a dramatic narrative of collapse and redemption, attrition and endurance. It witnessed not only remarkable individual performances but also a spirited resurrection by England, who, trailing by 288 on first innings, seemed consigned to defeat—only to turn the tide and leave the West Indies scrambling to escape with a draw.

The pivotal arc of the match belonged to England’s second innings—a feat of defiance and artistry, led by Peter May and Colin Cowdrey. Their record-breaking partnership of 411 for the fourth wicket was a masterclass in discipline and technique.
