The same old Robert Lewandowski

Bayern Munich have experienced a rollercoaster ride in this season. But still, they have continued to swim through the choppy waters and kept their hopes alive. New boys are emerging in the scene as fearsome contenders and thus, Bayern could realize, they need to lift up their game in each every match. After a break of 66 days, Bundesliga returned to action where Borussia Dortmund started off with a bang by thrashing FC Schalke 4-0, which meant, Hansi Flick’s side would need to start the same way.

The start of the German Giants had been slow – it took a while for them to rediscover their lost mojo and they gained their momentum, they displayed some wonderful football against Union Berlin.

Who else but Robert Lewandowski gave Bayern the lead when he rolled his penalty within 40 minutes.

One cannot forget Lewandowski’s knee injury before the break. It became a big worry for Bayern think-tank as not only the Bundesliga title was at stake, but the UEFA Champions League was also a big target Hansi. Thankfully, this brief hiatus helped a lot – it brought the Bayern goal-scoring machine back into that zone where he left before the injury.

Against Union Berlin, it was his 40th goal from just 34 appearances in all top-level competitions in the 2019-20 season.   

He joined Bayern Munich in 2014-15 season from Dortmund and netted a modest 25 goals throughout the season, but later, his numbers would only stagger each and every one. Since the following seasons,  Lewandowski has notched successive hauls of 42, 43, 41, and 40 – some of the goals scored in those seasons were eye-popping, which made him one of the best strikers in the world.

In the Bundesliga, Lewandowski has scored 26 goals from 24 appearances. Whether he can challenge Gerd Muller’s forty goals in a Bundesliga season would be a matter of interest for all. Hansi backed him for that.

But, Bayern have just eight games remaining in the league, so it would take a great effort for Lewandowski to match or pass Muller, who set the record while playing for Bayern in the 1971-72 season.

For a charismatic striker like Lewandowski, nothing is impossible.

But most importantly, it was great to witness Lewandowski back in action.
