The rivalry between Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi has overshadowed many of football’s traditional rivalries over the last ten years. Since the legendary CR7 arrived at the Santiago Bernabeu, Messi found someone who could challenge his talent and skill and make his presence shaky in world football. CR7 not only overshadowed Messi, but at the same time, brought back the glory days of Real Madrid.
The last time, CR7 met Messi was two years ago in the El Clasico. In the summer of 2018-19 season, CR7 moved to Italy and the rivalry took a break and also, took the sheen-off El Clasico, which always generated extra-hype due to the presence of CR7.
After two years the Lionel Messi - Cristiano Ronaldo rivalry would be reignited when Barcelona take on Juventus at the Camp Nou tonight.
This is the most anticipated and much-awaited reunion between two of the greatest players of this generation and it will be a treat for fans and neutrals alike.
Barcelona and Juventus will be battling for the top spot in the group. The Catalans only need to avoid too heavy a defeat to see their supremacy in Group G remain intact. Barcelona had registered a 2-0 win over Juventus, without CR7, at the Allianz Stadium in the reverse fixture and Ronald Koeman will be hoping that his side can replicate that form at home.
Cristiano Ronaldo would return to the venue, where he loves to score and has scored more goals than his rival in the El Clasicos.
He scored 18 goals against Barcelona in his nine seasons in Spain. It left him tied with fellow Real Madrid legend Alfredo Di Stefano as the second-highest scorer in El Clasico history behind Messi’s 26 goals.
To be fair, though, Leo has played in La Liga for 17 seasons.
Moreover, Ronaldo remains the highest goal-scorer in the El Clasico history at Camp Nou on 12 goals with Messi on 11.
The legend would set foot on the pitch of Camp Nou again tonight with the intention of conquering it again against his rival.
Again, CR7 is enjoying a great 2020-21 season.
Ronaldo has enjoyed the better 2020-21 campaign thus far and Messi's distinct lack of goals from open play this season, just two in La Liga, has not done anything good for the Catalans.
It appears as though the disparity between the two Ballon d'Or winners has been yawning throughout 2020 as a whole with Ronaldo's goal-scoring record proving particularly impressive.
Ronaldo has scored more non-penalty goals (25) across the entire calendar year than Messi has scored in total (24).
Juventus would face a Catalan unit who are still reeling after the defeat against the newly promoted Cadiz. Even though in the Champions League, Barca has been a different kettle of fish, but until now, the opposition either had been weak or ravaged by injuries or COVID-19.
Juve have looked good of late.
There has been a lot of concern over the fact that they have continuously looked a bit exposed in the absence of Cristiano Ronaldo and his return has given the Italian Giant a massive boost.
Juventus have won four of their last five games and are on a good run. They have been able to squeeze out much-needed points of late and will be looking to do more of the same against Barcelona at the Camp Nou.
Despite Barcelona's excellent Champions League record so far this term, they have been very inconsistent in the La Liga and Juventus will be looking to take advantage of it.
And, with the in-form Cristiano Ronaldo around, who boasts a very good goal-scoring record in Camp Nou, Juve can expect to rock.
