Just a few days back, it was a thrilling night at the Etihad Stadium where the Premier League Champions relished a nine-goal thriller in the Champions League and came out as the winner and today they hosted Southampton who ended up sharing points in a match where City had been disappointing.
Manchester City gave an uncharacteristically lacklustre showing against an impressive Southampton side, who even come away from the Etihad Stadium disappointed not to be taking all three points home with them.
Pep Guardiola's men failed to register a shot on target until the 90th minute and did not look their usual selves with the ball, despite dominating possession. It seemed Raheem Sterling had rescued them with a late winner, but VAR intervened to rule the goal out for an offside.
Manchester City did escape a penalty scare thanks to VAR, when it was used to overturn a spot-kick awarded to Southampton and a red card for Kyle Walker for his alleged foul on Adam Armstrong.
The Citizens were perhaps suffering from a European hangover, having been involved in a nine-goal thriller against RB Leipzig on Wednesday, although that game was also at the Etihad and Guardiola had freshened his side with five changes for the visit of the Saints.
The result leaves City three points behind Liverpool, who beat Crystal Palace 3-0 and at risk of being overtaken in second place by a host of clubs, including Manchester United, Chelsea and Everton.
