PSG were the deserving winners in Paris, but it's not over yet for Real Madrid

While Manchester City, the hot favourites to win the UEFA Champions League this season, was running riots against Sporting CP, life after away goals in the Champions League's knockout Round was getting accustomed in Paris, where Paris Saint-Germain had the edge over Real Madrid, who showed little intent in the final third.

The hosts ended the night with the majority of the ball, and they had 22 attempts at Thibaut Courtois’ goal – finally beating the Belgian with the last of those. On the other end, Los Blancos didn’t have a single shot on target from the three they attempted.

Carlo Ancelotti was reminded yet again of the defence which was shredded into pieces from the word go by Kylian Mbappe. He drove at Real Madrid’s backline every time he had the ball, and he was involved in creating the game’s first chance that Angel Di Maria sent over.

Real Madrid bound Mbappe was the next to try his luck, but the attempt went wide of the post.

Even with Lionel Messi on the pitch, Mbappe was a nightmare for the backline of Madrid. He looked determined to prove something to Real Madrid, PSG, and everybody that he is a professional, and even if he ends up as a Real Madrid player next season, his dedication to PSG would never come under scrutiny as long as he stays in Paris.

Dani Carvajal was taken to the cleaners as he conceded a penalty against which he had no complaints, having been beaten easily by Mbappe. Messi, though, saw his spot-kick saved well by Courtois - a lifeline that might prove productive in Santiago Bernabeu.

The attacks kept coming in one direction, and Neymar’s introduction for Di Maria only added problems - he became the central figure and toyed with Real backline with his playmaking abilities and smooth passing.

The back-heel assist of Neymar to Mbappe was reminiscent of Socrates and created a moment of magic in Paris.

PSG had been the deserving winner and Ancelotti will have plenty to ponder for the return leg where Messi would return to Bernabeu again to prove his point along with Mbappe and Neymar.

Madrid need to buck up and fight back.
