The rapid rise of José Lucas Gomes da Silva, better known as Zé Lucas, represents the kind of accelerated pathway often associated with Brazil’s most exciting young midfield talents. Born on March 23, 2008, in Vitória de Santo Antão, Pernambuco, Zé Lucas joined Sport Recife’s academy at only eight years old and steadily emerged as one of the club’s outstanding prospects.
Like many technically gifted Brazilian players, his football education was shaped in part by futsal, an environment that helped sharpen his spatial awareness, close control and ability to make decisions in congested areas. Those qualities would eventually become defining features of his midfield game.
His transition from academy football to the senior level came remarkably early. On January 11, 2025, aged just 16, Zé Lucas made his first-team debut, starting in Sport Recife’s 1–1 Campeonato Pernambucano draw with Afogados. His composure immediately stood out. After only a handful of senior appearances, he was permanently integrated into the first-team squad and rewarded with a contract extension running through 2028.

Sport Recife retained a 20% economic interest, potentially allowing his formative club to benefit substantially should his career eventually take him to Europe.
That possibility already appears firmly on the horizon. Zé Lucas has attracted attention from major European clubs, with the likes of Barcelona and Bayern Munich reportedly monitoring his development.
Cruzeiro therefore represents an important intermediate step in his career. Rather than moving abroad at the earliest opportunity, he can continue developing in Brazilian football while experiencing high-level domestic competition.
