217 for 4 in 31 overs might indicate, it was an easy win,
but those who watched the match, will realize, at one stage, it became a tough
task. Sachith Pathirana entered into the scene and bagged three quick wickets
to set jitters in the Australian batting line-up. He was tough to handle and
unplayable. But George Bailey’s composure arrested further collapse as
Australia sealed the series in style.
After a brilliant spell of fast-medium-pace bowling by John
Hastings, Aaron Finch set the stage on fire with a swashbuckling half-century
and the equalled fastest ODI fifty by an Australian and excelled the Australian
chase to a great extent. Despite the Pathirana threat, Australia reached the
shore safely and I must say, the absence of Steve Smith didn’t matter much for
the Aussies.
But an injury to Angelo Mathews made Sri Lanka suffer. He
retired hurt and that particular period during his absence hampered Sri Lanka’s
momentum. They lost their way and failed to capitalize on Dhananjaya de Silva’s
breezy knock.
