Brilliant Liverpool at North London

 

The more the Reds would win, the more they would be able to forget this disastrous season. Like their counterpart in the upcoming Champions League clash – Real Madrid – there are no other options for Jurgen Klopp other than winning the majority of the matches in the remaining season.

 

It was the day where West Brom simply thrashed an in-form Chelsea and at North London, the Liverpool fans might just keep on thinking of another terrible show. Yes, might just, Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal hand over Klopp’s Liverpool a defeat and run away bagging full points only pile on the misery, but, well, North London was painted red after the match.

Liverpool controlled the game and fully dominated Arsenal, who were unable to show any attacking spark. It was all Arteta’s team could do to cross halfway and it was difficult to remember them creating a chance.

But the cutting edge was missing and it was discovered when Klopp substituted Andy Robertson and made the way for Diogo Jota.

Jota took three minutes for his run into the penalty area perfectly to meet Trent Alexander-Arnold’s delicious cross from the right. His back-post header was too powerful for Bernd Leno, and Jurgen Klopp’s men had the lead they wanted.

Alexander-Arnold has endured a difficult period with his exclusion from Gareth Southgate’s England squad but he was excellent here, with Klopp noting that he had benefited “100%” from not playing during the international break.

For the second Trent played a pass inside to Fabinho, whose ball over the top saw Mohamed Salah get away from a weak Gabriel challenge, and for the third, he seized upon a loose clearance from Gabriel. From there, Salah crossed, Sadio Mane spun and provided a little touch and Jota rammed home.

After the first goal by Jota, Arsenal’s resistance broke and there was always that the floodgates would open. 

The score remained at 3-0 and it should have been more.

All in all, then, this was a perfect Saturday for Klopp and his team. Their rivals lost, with Chelsea stunned at home to West Brom at lunchtime and Leicester beaten by Manchester City in the early-evening kick-off, and they took full advantage.

With eight games to go, the gap to fourth is just two points.

After a dark winter, spring brings with it new hope.

The lost spirits of Liverpool could be seen once again.

That’s three straight wins – the first time they’ve managed that since November – and three clean sheets in a row as well.
