Manchester United disappoint

Manchester United is blessed with talents and the best player in the world, still, they are found wanting and until and unless there are any late dramas, the team is not clicking. After the dramatic victory against Villarreal last week, Old Trafford hosted Everton and after the final whistle, the crowd went back home after witnessing a toothless display from the Red Devils.

An Andros Townsend goal with 25 minutes to go cancelled out Anthony Martial's opener from just before the break, as Everton snatched one point at Old Trafford against a struggling Manchester United side.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer decided to start without an in-form Cristiano Ronaldo, but the Red Devils hit the ground running, with Martial and Edinson Cavani missing one clear-cut chance each. David de Gea, meanwhile, made a brilliant save to deny Demarai Gray just after the half-hour mark.

When everything indicated that the two teams would head into halftime in a goalless stalemate, Martial gave United the lead after making the most of a Bruno Fernandes assist.

Manchester United struggled to create much in the first 20 minutes of the second half and Solskjaer sent on Ronaldo in search of a spark in attack, but Townsend beat De Gea on the counter to equalise for the Toffees.

The hosts pushed for a winner and piled the pressure on Everton, but they failed to break down the visitors' defence in the remaining minutes and the Toffees even had a Yerri Mina goal ruled out by VAR for offside.

“I am really pleased to come here and perform the way we performed against a very good team. Maybe if Davies shot and finished we would be talking about a different thing. We did well and worked hard. In the second half, the team reacted well and we had chances to win the game. We know Townsend’s commitment is there, and so is his quality. Everybody was doing quite well,” said Rafa Benitez, the manager of Chelsea.

Ole said after the match, “Parts of it was really good. We started well, high energy, scored a fantastic goal. The second half, we lacked the cutting edge to get the second which is vital. From a corner, we conceded five seconds later so that was disappointing. We weren’t too open; we had enough players behind the ball but didn’t deal with the tackles.”

“We didn’t regroup and reorganize well enough. We need to be better at when to risk it, and how not to be counter-attacked, that’s the key lesson. Anthony did well, could have had one or two more. We didn’t concede many chances, but we did concede a goal. We got outmuscled but should have cleared it. You can work all day long on systems, but it has to be dealt with there and then.”

Manchester United have no win in their last two Premier League games and they currently sit second in the Premier League table, level on points with Everton, who are having a decent start to the 2021-22 campaign.
