The humiliating defeat of West Indies at Edgbaston: ICC must implement the two-tier Test system

A humiliating conclusion is nothing new for West Indies but in each match and in each series they script humiliations in a new way. Yesterday was one of those days where they gave humiliation a new name. West Indies  digested one of the most disgraceful defeats ever in their history of Test cricket. Nineteen wickets fell in a single for 261 runs! Being a fan of Caribbean cricket since my school days, it was nothing an absolute shocker! It was painful to witness!

Since the beginning of this century, cricket pundits kept on discussing about the downfall of West Indies and gave various solutions to overcome this bad patch each minute. Meanwhile, the players started to shift focus on earning cash and invested their interest on cricket’s bustard child, Twenty20 and the tournament of evils, the Twenty20 leagues, by undermining, but West Indies cricket players and their ‘awesome’ Cricket Board hardly bothered about their enriched cricket culture, glorious past and ardent fans but watched an empire to perish each second, the best format of the game, at which once upon a time they ruled like a Lion, Test cricket.

Frankly speaking, the West Indians are not interested to play five-day matches anymore. By scripting such performances each year, they are simply insulting Test cricket. And for which, to teach such teams a lesson, the International Cricket Council must implement the two-tier Test system. This system would not only force such teams to improve but will restore balance in Test cricket as well.

I would feel bad to see West Indies relegated in the two-tier system, but for the greater interest of Test cricket and reinstall the spirit of Test cricket among the West Indians, this system is the final answer.

Thank You
