Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane, and Roberto Firmino – there is
hardly any team in world football today who does not fear this frontline trio
of Liverpool.
They have kicked-off an era, which gave Liverpool so much to
cheer for. Their replacement will always be tough to find, but football world
always keeps on producing talents like Timo Werner, the German and RB Leipzig
forward, who became the choice of Liverpool fans thanks to the German’s public
flirtations with Jurgen Klopp’s side throughout the season and reports of a
€52m release clause in his RB Leipzig contract.
Anfield was expected to be Werner’s next home despite
Liverpool never holding talks with the Bundesliga outfit regarding a move for
the striker.
But the move took a sharp U-turn as Chelsea activated the
release clause of Werner.
Liverpool's unwillingness to meet the release clause for
Timo Werner prompted the RB Leipzig striker to have a change of heart and
accept an offer from Chelsea.
While Klopp is an admirer of Werner, Liverpool - who had
been tracking him since 2017 - were not tempted to trigger the £54mllion
release fee, which is due to expire on June 15.
Werner, having waited in vain for a move to Bayern Munich
last summer, didn't want to take the chance of failing to secure a transfer
away from Leipzig for a second successive year.
Liverpool’s unwillingness to activate the release clause
opened the doors for Chelsea who agreed on a deal in principle to sign the
talented German forward.
Chelsea were unable to sign players last year and opted not
to bring in any acquisitions in January, instead focusing on their main targets
this summer.
The club are also interested in bringing in a new left-back,
with Leicester's Ben Chilwell their number one target.
The Werner move is a smart one from Chelsea, who are passing
through a transition period.
Frank Lampard took the responsibility of making the club
great again and thus, investing in versatility and Werner fits his plans pretty
well.
Werner was playing as an out and out center-forward at
Stuttgart and under Julian Nagelsmann at Leipzig, he was put out wide in a game
against Bayern Munich to try to counter Bayern's wide players. He's very quick
and showed his ability and versatility from there.
Chelsea have signed Hakim Ziyech from Ajax and have someone
like Christian Pulisic under the wings. A frontline of Werner, Ziyech, and
Pulisic is expected to give tough times to the opposition in Premier League.
