Sri Lanka fielding and batting have been awful on day 2. Moeen
Ali was dropped on 36 and 105 while Chris Woakes on 8, a regulation catch which
Dinesh Chandimal did not lay a hand on it. Moeen Ali utilized the stroke of
luck and went on to notch up a strokeful 155 not out. He stitched a 92-run
partnership for the seventh wicket with Woakes and 98 runs for the last two
wickets combined. England declared at 498 for 9.
Sri Lanka’s reply was horrifying. The top order was jolted by the guile of James Anderson, Chris Woakes and Staurt Broad while Steve Finn’s sharpness always kept the Lankan batsmen at bay. Lahiru Thirimanne and Rangana Herath tried to bring stability, but Broad ended up the resistance by notching up the scalp of Herath at the fag end of the day. Sri Lanka are 91 for 8 at stumps and it was a sorry tale.
No sign of improvement from any of the Sri Lankan top order
batsmen. I guess, their problem is more about temperament rather than
technique.
