It was a dramatic day of football. When did the world last
witness such a competition for the place in the UEFA Champions League, one
cannot remember! But in this season, the chase for a place in the Champions
League went down the wire – the supporters had to wait until the final day of
the season to know who would join Liverpool and Manchester City.
At the end of a dramatic day, Manchester United and Chelsea
have sealed spots in next season's Champions League, after the two clubs won
their final matches of the season to confirm their places in the top four.
Meanwhile, Leicester City and Tottenham are headed to the
Europa League after their results on Sunday, with Wolves left waiting for the
result of the FA Cup final, which will determine their European fate.
After a tense first half, Manchester United’s most crucial
moment came in the 70th minute when Bruno Fernandes fired past Kasper
Schmeichel from the spot after Jonny Evans fouled Anthony Martial inside the
box. Jesse Lingard then sealed the victory in the eighth minute of stoppage
time.
Fernandes' goal doomed Leicester to a fifth-place finish,
but with Jamie Vardy winning the award for the top scorer of the season was
just a mere consolation.
The 33-year-old beat Southampton’s Danny Ings, Arsenal’s
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah, and Manchester City’s
Raheem Sterling to the top scorer award.
In London, Chelsea booked their Champions League spot with a
2-0 win over the Wolves.
Mason Mount's stunning free-kick gave Chelsea the lead in
the first minute of first-half stoppage time.
Just three minutes later, their lead was doubled, with
Olivier Giroud adding the second.
A Wolves defeat allowed Tottenham Hotspur to claim the sixth
place after a draw against Crystal place and would join the Foxes in the Europa
League.
Manchester City and Liverpool won in a dominating fashion,
while Aston Villa survived a relegation scare with Watford and FC Bournemouth
finished as the relegated teams.
