The match was just 10 minutes old. Ferland Mendy burst into
the box like Roberto Carlos and fired high past Granada goalkeeper Rui Silva
from a tight angle. It was a marvelous goal and Mendy became the 21st Real
Madrid player to score in LaLiga this season. That goal was enough to instill
the momentum withing the Royal Whites as five minutes later, Isco's backheel
released Luka Modric, who played in Benzema for a curled finish.
Granada has been one of the giant killers this season and it
would not have been surprising if they halted Real, but keeping in mind their
giant-killing-habit, Real Madrid did not wait too long and gained the upper
hand as soon as the match started. Granada pulled one back, but Zidane did not
go for adventure and sat back to bag full points.
Real are just one match away from the coveted 34th LaLiga
title.
Zidane started any pure wingers.
The scheme of five central midfielders suffocated Valencia
with possession and counter-pressing, but it suffered against a more aggressive
defensive team in Atletico Madrid.
Granada defended well to start, doing well to cut off
passing lanes in a medium block – it lasted for a short period as Mendy and
Benzema laid it to rest.
Isco, Modric, Kroos, Casemiro, and Valverde played narrow
defensively (which had its pros and cons, making for a disjointed press but
good transition offense), and all five midfielders — in conjunction to Karim
Benzema dropping deep — were able to keep tidy possession.
The defence looked a bit shaky in the second, but still did
not let any damage to happen.
Zinedine Zidane remains unbeaten and he is ready to relish
the moment of glory.
