Manchester City thrash the Reds – A warning for others next season

A week ago, Liverpool’s Premier League title was confirmed after 30 years, and then, they received their much-waited guard of honour given by the champions of last season. But as soon as the match commenced, all of a sudden, Liverpool’s title seemed to be a flash out of the pan. Pep Guardiola’s men simply massacred Liverpool with a thumping 4-0 victory.

The Reds started brightly with Mohamed Salah crashing a low effort against the post inside the opening 20 minutes.

City soon hit the front, though, Kevin de Bruyne stroking home a 25th-minute penalty after Sterling was hauled down by Joe Gomez following a sumptuous turn.

Sterling made it 2-0 when he collected Foden's pass inside the area and cleverly clipped past Alisson from eight yards.

Foden added a sublime third shortly before the break, firing over Alisson after the brilliant De Bruyne and Ilkay Gundogan had combined to carve open Liverpool's defence.

Substitute Oxlade-Chamberlain then turned into his own net in the 66th minute as he stretched to clear Sterling's effort on goal.

One of the best defences with the best goalkeeper in the Premier League were left clueless, shattered and given a warning by Pep Guardiola for the next season – City would be hard to stop.

The way City played it was evident, deep down, losing the title this season has hurt them enough, but, in turn, it is working as a motivating factor to regroup and play the best football on the pitch, so that the spirit of winning the title next season remains intact.

Jurgen Klopp needs to get out the hangover as quickly as possible so that the cruel past does not revisit.
