Pakistan v England, 2nd Test, Day 1 - Younis Khan, Misbah-ul-Haq and Asad Shafiq script a productive day for Pakistan

Younis and Misbah trigger nostalgia

Pakistan discovered themselves in a bit of a bother as soon as Shan Masood was dismissed, but thankfully, Pakistan are blessed with two experienced batters. Younis Khan and Misbah-ul-Haq steadied the ship again and arrested a collapse when England were looking dangerous.

Whenever Younis Khan and Misbah-ul-Haq bat together under pressure, there is a sense of nostalgia among the cricket fans who have been following cricket for a long time. They remind me of Imran Khan-Javed Miandad and Inzamam-ul-Haq-Younis-Mohammad-Yousuf’s courageous partnerships while those of my father’s generation are reminded of Hanif Mohammad-Mushtaq-Mohammad-Saeed-Ahmed and  Zaheer Abbas-Asif Iqbal-Mustaq-Mohammad’s defiant stands in tough situations. Pakistan never had problems in having the ideal replacements  and the legacy has been carried on quite impressively.

Mark Wood was impressive

The track was flat with nothing for the fats bowlers but overall, I was impressed with Mark Wood’s bowling. He troubled the batters with his trajectory and pace. His deliveries from an acute angle are quite tough to handle. They baffle the batters a lot. The focus of a batsman must be very good.

Alastair Cook did try different things to unsettle Pakistan, but Younis, Misbah and Asad Shafiq have been  rock solid and for a brief period it was tough to deter them.

Misbah’s moment of joy

That was an innings-stabilizer from Misbah. Just when his team needed the best, he delivered the best. It was his ninth Test hundred and first against England. Moreover, Misbah has now hit the most sixes in Test cricket as captain along with MS Dhoni. Both he and Dhoni has hit 51 sixes in Test cricket. How logical is it to tag Misbah as tuk-tuk?
