A wicket in the first ball of the first innings, a wicket in
the second ball of the second innings and a wicket in the last ball of the day.
Now that was an interesting day.
Sri Lanka won the toss and elected to bat first without any
hesitation, but found themselves at sea. They were 9 for 2 and needed rapid resuscitation
on track which was good for batting.
Kusal Mendis was the man again for Sri
Lanka. He carried on his fantastic form to Galle and unleashed some exquisite
strokes to stabilize the Lankan ship while Angelo Mathews and Kusal Perera contributed
productively as Sri Lanka managed to finish their first innings with 281 all
out.
The Galle track traditionally supports the spinners, but today, it was all
about Mitchell Marsh’s superb display of fast and reverse swing bowling. He
steamed, unfazed by the heat and humidity, and bang the ball in late at pace to
test the Lankan batting line-up. Other than Mendis, none of the Lankan batting
line-up didn’t find it easy to handle Starc.
David Warner’s reply was swashbuckling. He continued to play his stroke despite
the early loss of Joe Burns, but a late turn from Dilruwan Perera ended Warner’s
stay at the crease and made the day an evenly balanced one.
