Pakistan v England, 3rd Test, Day 3 - Classy Mohammad Hafeez

Four years ago while talking to Kamran Abbasi on Twitter, I suggested whether Azhar Ali can be played as a Test opener in the Pakistan team. He agreed with me and said that he might be used in that position in the future. In this Test match, Azhar Ali opened the innings for Pakistan and failed in the first innings, but his response in the second innings was steadier and watchful – qualities required as an opener on such tricky tracks. I firmly believe that he is well-equipped enough to open the innings.

Mohammad Hafeez’s knock of 97 has been his best Test innings so far. It was a classy one and surely had an impact on Pakistan’s innings who were trailing by 72 runs. He handled Anderson’s crafty bowling better than his teammates and fetched runs on the off-and-onside and along the V with authority. His six off Anderson’s offcutter in the 38th over hinted how confident he has been throughout the afternoon and evening session. He deserves a hundred tomorrow.

The Pakistani bowlers made the early inroads in the morning session, but out of nowhere, the guile of the Pakistani bowlers was challenged by the willow of Samit Patel whose sturdiness  helped England to stretch the lead. He was undone by a beauty from Yasir – the ball pitched on middle and leg and then took a snake like turn to kiss the l of the offstump. Shane Warne would be proud of Yasir.

James Anderson and Stuart Broad’s show with the ball was a delightful sight for the cricket lovers. They made the old ball move late and it was not an easy task to face them out there. Their cutters made the ball a more lethal object of destruction, but it didn’t create enough damage as the bat of Hafeez acted like a shield to protect his team.

We are heading for another England v Pakistan Test match classic.
