During the half time, the Irish were smiling while the
French unit was frustrated as their performance was not up to the mark and the
crowd in Lyon expressed their displeasure. But the Irish should not have rested
on their laurels too much.
The French regrouped themselves well and the equalizer was
the product of a typical French build-up play. Anyone who watched or followed
the France of 1984, can understand what I am trying to say – some smooth passes
in and around the D-box, then spread things a bit, create enough space to pass
the ball to the winger and in the mean time, the striker positions himself in
the right place as he knows very well where the winger on the wide-flank would
send the ball and the end product is, BINGO.
The second goal was due to poor marking by the Irish
defenders and they paid the price of leaving Antoine Griezmann free. When
Giroud did very well to win the header between the two Irish centre -halves, the
Irish man markers should have been careful about Griezmann. France were in the
lead and when the big teams gain the momentum, it’s always hard to stop them.
