Albania were unfortunate to lose against Switzerland and
then France, but the well-equipped and robust outfit finally achieved what they
deserved in their first major competition. The Albanian supporters are similar
to the Bangladesh cricket fans – vibrant and passionate and have lit up the
atmosphere throughout the tournament so far. The victory against Romania was
their first win against the same opponent since 1948, a wonderful achievement
which has made the fans and the whole nation proud.
Albania now have the slightest of hopes to advance into the
next round. They need to wait till the group phase is over. If Albania do reach
the last 16 then they will face the winners of Group B, which contains England
and Wales, or the winners of Group C, which includes Northern Ireland.
Romania’s footballing prowess has waned a lot. They were
such a brilliant team during the 90s, but suddenly we were not able to notice
them either in Euros or in the FIFA World Cups. The current generation has
failed to carry on the legacy of Gheorghe Hagi.
