#EURO2016 - Let the best team win the tournament

The Euros will kick-off from tonight. It’s one of the mega-events of the year and already it has generated a lot of interest and created hype in this part of the world. Whenever a mega-event of soccer shows up, cricket takes a back seat and all of a sudden, it disappears. The Euros are one of soccer’s most followed tournaments after the FIFA World Cup.

It will be tough for me to follow this year’s mega event as because, most of the matches of the top teams will take place at 1:00 am BST and thus, it might not be possible for me to follow all the matches live. I shall have to rely on the highlight packages most of the times. .

As usual, I shall be rooting for Germany. After Brazil I have always supported Germany and Italy and in case of Euros, I prefer the Netherlands as the third team. The Germans do have injury problems, but they are temperamentally so strong that even their B-side can lift the trophy. You can never write off the Germans.

I can’t be confident about the Italian side. Only Antonio Conte’s coaching skills and charisma might help them to advance in this tournament.

France’s eye-popping record at home is making them everyone’s favorite, but one thing the critics forget, this team doesn’t have charismatic characters like Michel Platini and Zinedine Zidane. Time and again, the French revolutions have been scripted by the virtue of individual charisma. Yes, there are players like Anthony Martial, Antoine Griezzman, Paul Pogba and co, but time will answer how well-equipped are they to carry on the hopes of a nation. I am also not forgetting the fact, scripts can be rewritten as well.

England are a good side. For the first time, I am impressed with this English side since the Italia 90. It’s more about intent rather than glamour. The defence is good, midfield looks competent enough to create opportunities while the frontline players are eager to utilize the opportunities they get.

Then there is Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal. Critics and fans are not confident about their team, but if you observe this team then you can notice the ideal blend of young experienced players. If CR7 can lift his game up like the Champions League, this tournament might be his swan song.

It’s hard to ignore Belgium as well. They just need to show the character which is very important in such mega events while, I don’t think Spain can repeat the same glory this year. They have past their best.

If we think about the surprising element, “what if” and repeat of 1992 and 2004 then, teams like Sweden, Poland, Russia or Wales can leave us astonished. But such fairy tales are unlikely to happen this year. My instincts tell me, it will be the tournament of the best team who will show compactness in defence and midfield and utilize the counterattacks fruitfully.

The Euros have always been a cracking event and since 1988, I have been enjoying this event wholeheartedly. But I don’t want shocks like 1992 and 2004 and want the best team of the tournament to lift the trophy.

Thank You
Faisal Caesar
