Had David de Gea not been there in front of the Spanish
goal, Italy would have scored more goals. This Italian side is not only solid
defensively, but they are well organized in the midfield which plays a vital role
in creating space for the forwards to cash in. Antonio Conte’s philosophy is
almost like Marcelo Lippi, who gave enough importance on
creative-and-dynamic-play-on-the-midfield. Yes, there is no Andrea Pirlo, but
the current crop of Italian midfielders is quite inspired by the legacy created
by Pirlo.
The Italians dominated throughout the match and made Spain
took insipid. In the first half, Spain failed to win any tackles, dull in the
midfield and created lesser chances. They were undone by the class and tactics
of Antonio Conte’s men. And what can I say about Buffon? I am speechless: 5
saves, 2 punches and 1 clean sheet. Age is just a number.
This Italian team is a dangerous unit and the Germans should
be careful about them as history says, Germany have never been able to beat
Italy in the big tournaments.
Before the tournament commenced, the critics stated, this
Italian team is the worst of all times in a major tournament, but one thing we
all forget, it’s always a foolish act to underestimate teams like Brazil,
Germany, Italy or Holland. These teams always find a way to lift themselves up
when it matters the most.
I think, the Spanish era has come to an end. It was coming
and I guessed it when Brazil handed them a 3-0 drubbing at Maracana in the
Confederations Cup in 2013. It’s time to wake up for the Spanish media and
realize the harsh reality.
