A match between Austria and Hungary doesn’t generate enough
interest these days, but the present day football fans have no idea about the
glorious past of these two teams. Especially, once upon a time, Hungary were
the masters of the game. While, Austria were one of the superpowers of world
football, along with Italy, Hungary, Uruguay, Poland and former Czechoslovakia
in the 30s and 50s.
Hungary’s footballing prowesses started to wane in the mid
60s and Austria were never the same team again after their fantastic run in the
FIFA World Cup 1966. So did the vim of Poland, Russia and Yugoslavia sapped
away in the course of time and some of the fans like me still miss their
footballing display.
Well played Hungary. Nice to see them win a match in a mega
event.
